A Message Regarding Rosiglitazone (Avandia) for Joslin Clinic Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

You may have seen recent news reports about the drug rosiglitazone, prescribed under the name Avandia, a drug that is commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes. An analysis published in the May 21, 2007 online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that rosiglitazone may be associated with an increased risk of heart attack and cardiovascular death.

If you are currently taking rosiglitazone, Joslin Clinic recommends that you contact your endocrinologist or primary care physician for more information and to review your treatment options. There are alternative medications that can be used to treat type 2 diabetes. You should not stop taking any medications until you speak with your doctor, who will review your case with you and determine the best treatment option for you.

If you would like additional information, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a consumer inquiries hotline: 888-INFO-FDA.
