Donating a kidney to someone in need is an incredibly selfless act that affects not only the lives of the donor and recipient, but the lives of their families as well. Paired kidney exchanges, such as the four-way kidney exchange that recently occurred at the University of Maryland Medical Center, affect the lives of multiple donors, recipients, and families, and often require the cooperation of people who are hundreds (or even thousands) of miles apart from one another.
The numbers below not only show the high level of cooperation involved in performing such an extensive procedure, but also provide an overview of just how great the need for kidney donors is and how paired kidney exchanges can benefit the lives of all those involved in the procedure.
