Overview:
This program features an interview about celiac disease, a genetic disorder triggered by gluten, a protein found in many foods. Celiac disease can cause a variety of symptoms ranging from abdominal pain to malnutrition. Celiac disease may also be the prime target for a new area of research into how our genes interact with certain factors in the environment to cause certain diseases. Researchers are also looking into how studying stem cells in our intestines could lead to the development of new treatments.

Part two of this two-part program addresses the following topics:

Guest:
Dr. Alessio Fasano, a pediatric GI specialist at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children and director of the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research. Dr. Fasano also is a professor of pediatrics, medicine and physiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he heads the Mucosal Biology Research Center.
