This four-minute video produced by the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts highlights altruistic kidney donor Ed Behn and the central role he played as the first donor in a four-way kidney exchange that took place at the University of Maryland Medical Center in November 2009.
Both Behn and Dr. Matthew Cooper, Director of Kidney Transplantation and Clinical Research in the Division of Transplantation at UMMC, appear in the video to discuss the four-way kidney exchange and the crucial impact it had on the lives of all of the patients involved and their families. Although Behn insists that he's no hero, Dr. Cooper thinks otherwise, calling attention to his patient's enthusiasm and willingness to be the initiator of this particular chain of kidney donations.
