Construction on the Medical Center's newest facility began with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 13, 2010. The groundbreaking blessing was delivered by Reverend Dr. Susan Carole Roy from the Medical Center's Department of Pastoral Care Services.
The new facility will be connected to the existing R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Building. It will expand the Shock Trauma Center, boost the capacity of the Medical Center's adult and pediatric emergency departments and provide additional beds for surgical intensive care patients.
Governor Martin O'Malley and U.S. Representative C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger joined Medical Center leaders for the celebration, during which a major fundraising campaign led by Senator Francis X. Kelly, with Cal Ripken, Jr., serving as the honorary chairman, was announced.
