Approximately one percent of donor kidneys contain three arteries that must be reconstructed before being transplanted into a potential recipient. In this three-minute video, Dr. Stephen Bartlett, a Peter Angelos Distinguished Professor and chief of surgery at the UM Medical Center, discusses how he is able to reconstruct those donor kidneys that arrive with three arteries through the use of advanced vascular surgery techniques he pioneered at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Dr. Bartlett further discusses how he recently performed a three-artery kidney transplant between a father and daughter, in which the daughter's donated kidney had three arteries that had to be reconstructed before being transplanted into her father. He mentions the concerns other surgeons often cope with when attempting such complicated transplants and why he believes UMMC is specially qualified to handle these complex cases.
