Donald Upchurch originally attributed a swollen lymph node in his neck to an oncoming cold. When the swelling didn't go down, he visited his doctor who diagnosed him with head and neck cancer. He was referred to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center where his cancer was successfully treated. During his time at UMGCC, he participated in the clinical trial for the chemotherapy pill in addition to receiving standard chemotherapy and radiation.
