In laser hair removal, a beam of concentrated laser light is administered to areas of unwanted hair. The light is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair and in the surrounding hair follicle. This absorption of energy results in thermal destruction of the hair follicles and a loss of their ability to regenerate, resulting in permanent hair reduction. Unlike electrolysis, which kills one hair follicle at a time, the laser treats hundreds of follicles at a time. Furthermore, it is relatively painless compared to tweezing and electrolysis.
