Treatments
Treatments for ADHD/ADD may include:
- Medication: for many people with ADHD/ADD, medication helps to reduce hyperactivity and improve an individual's ability to focus, work, and learn. These medications, which must be prescribed by a physician, include:
- psychostimulants
- antidepressants
- neuroleptics
- tranquilizers
- antihypertensive medications
- Therapeutic intervention: this may involve parent and child, and often includes:
- psychotherapy
- cognitive-behavioral therapy
- social skills training
- support groups
- Counseling and education: this may be appropriate for parents and children. With children, this may include such methods as: modeling, self-verbalization, and self-reinforcement.
- School-based accommodations and interventions.
Treatment Myths and ADHD/ADD:
These treatments have not been scientifically shown to be effective in treating the majority of children or adults with ADHD:
- biofeedback
- restricted diets
- allergy treatments
- medicines to correct problems in the inner ear
- megavitamins
- chiropractic adjustment and bone re-alignment
- treatment for yeast infection
- eye training
- special colored glasses
