Transplant Surgery

The University of Maryland Division of Transplantation is one of the nation's largest transplant centers, with an established national reputation for innovation and technical/surgical excellence.

We were one of the first centers in the U.S. to remove a kidney laparoscopically from a living kidney donor for a transplant (called laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy), and our surgeons have performed more of these minimally invasive kidney removals than any other U.S. hospital. We've also played a leadership role in improving the technique.

Other minimally invasive treatments include:

Laparoscopic biopsies of pancreas transplants
Laparoscopic cholecystectomies, especially in the cirrhotic patients
Laparoscopic fenestration of liver cysts in polycystic liver disease
Laparoscopic fenestration of lymphoceles following kidney transplants
Laparoscopic liver biopsies
Laparoscopic liver resections
Laparoscopic placement of peritoneal dialysis catheter
Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors
