Transplant Surgery
The University of Maryland
Division of Transplantation is one of the nation's largest transplant centers, with an established national reputation for innovation and
technical/surgical excellence.
We were one of the first centers in the U.S. to remove a kidney laparoscopically from a living kidney donor for a transplant (called laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy), and our surgeons have performed more of these minimally invasive kidney removals than any other U.S. hospital. We've also played a leadership role in improving the technique.
Other minimally invasive treatments include:
- Laparoscopic biopsies of pancreas transplants
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomies, especially in the cirrhotic patients
- Laparoscopic fenestration of liver cysts in polycystic liver disease
- Laparoscopic fenestration of lymphoceles following kidney transplants
- Laparoscopic liver biopsies
- Laparoscopic liver resections
- Laparoscopic placement of peritoneal dialysis catheter
- Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors
