Improving Neuropathy and Mobility in Early Diabetes (INMED) Study

Investigators at the VA Maryland Health Care System and University of Maryland (Dr. James Russell), and Ann Arbor VAMC and University of Michigan (Drs. Neil Alexander and Kim Gretebeck) are conducting a study on patients with impaired glucose tolerance or who have recently been diagnosed with type II diabetes and also have peripheral neuropathy. We are recruiting participants at the Maryland site for a 1-year prospective randomized trial to determine the effect of an intensive home-based lifestyle intervention. We want to determine if this intervention improves neuropathy and mobility. A previous study suggested that a lifestyle intervention may help patients with mild neuropathy, but the current study is the first controlled intervention trial to test improvement in patients with early impaired glucose regulation (pre or early diabetes and neuropathy).

Patients will be reimbursed for the study and will receive free testing, nutrition and exercise counseling as part of this trial.

Y	N
		Age 30-75 years
		Prediabetes or early controlled diabetes less than 2 years
		Otherwise medically stable
		Have no other cause for neuropathy other than prediabetes or diabetes
		Walk independently without an assistive device
		Willing to travel to Baltimore for measurement sessions. This will occur approximately 4-5 times during the 12 month period.
		Willing to complete weekly self-report questionnaires
		Willing to accept assignment to either training group
		Willing and able to increase activity level and exercise independently at home
