Facilities

The University of Maryland Medical System is an 800 bed institution with a large out-patient department. The Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services, which covers the State of Maryland and comprises a 140 bed critical care unit was completed in 1989 and houses the most advanced technological support systems for trauma in the world.

The equipment of the Radiology Department is state-of-the-art, including five digital subtraction angiography suites, four multi-detector computerized body tomography units including real-time fluoroscopic CT, and one Phillips Eclipse 1.5 T and one GE Echospeed 1.5T magnetic resonance imagers. The Department has deployed a sophisticated hospital-wide picture archiving and communications system [PACS].

The VA Maryland Health Care System, Baltimore Division, is an integral part of the program. This all digital state-of-the-art 300 bed VA Hospital, which opened in January, 1993, adjoins the University of Maryland Hospital. The Radiology Department has a filmless PACS and is one of the most advanced of its kind in the world. All UMH residency programs are fully integrated with the Baltimore VA. Approximately 10% of the radiology resident's time is spent in the Baltimore VA Medical Center. Fellows usually spend the equivalent of one day per week there.

There are well-maintained and extensive teaching files including the ACR Learning Laboratory and a large departmental library, both of which are supervised by a full-time departmental librarian. A department photographer for computer and audiovisual support is available on a full-time basis. Academic secretaries equipped with word processing and slide making ability support the faculty and house staff in the production of grant applications, presentations and publications. 1200 sq. ft. of equipped basic research space is assigned to our department in a separate Medical School building.

Approximately 250,000 examinations are performed each year at UMMS. This includes 10,000 angiographic or interventional procedures, 35,000 computerized tomograms and 12,000 MR exams. Nearly 7,000 Neuro MR studies, and 600 cerebral angiograms, including approximately 150 neurointerventional procedures, are performed yearly. Nuclear Medicine performs approximately 10,000 studies per year and 12,000 sonographic procedures are performed annually. About 80,000 exams are performed annually at the VA Maryland Health Care System, Baltimore Division. University Imaging Center [15,000 exams/yr], Kernan Hospital [30,000 exams/yr], Shipley's Choice outpatient radiology, and Colonnade Imaging Center.
