UMMC is Recognized Again for Top Quality in Patient Care
For immediate release: March 31, 2009
The University of Maryland Medical Center has been listed among the nation's top 125 hospitals by Consumers' Checkbook, a non-profit research organization. The group's findings will be published in the May/June 2009 issue of AARP Magazine, which is available now online.
Consumers' Checkbook evaluated hospitals in the nation's 53 largest metropolitan areas to develop its list of the best 125 hospitals. The group uses government statistics, surveys of doctors and other forms of research to compare and rank hospitals for the quality of care they provide. Criteria for the survey include doctor and patient recommendations, as well as data on whether proper tests and procedures are carried out, rates of complications in major cases, and death rates for high-risk cases.
“Inclusion on this list of the nation's top hospitals further demonstrates the University of Maryland Medical Center's consistent focus on quality care and patient safety,” says Jeffrey A. Rivest, President and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center. “I am proud of the hard work and dedication of all of our staff””including our doctors””all of whom are on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Through their efforts, we continue to advance our mission to heal, teach, discover and provide the very best care,” adds Rivest.
For its evaluation, Consumers' Checkbook also took into account top ratings from other organizations that rank hospital safety and quality, such as the Leapfrog Group, which has included the University of Maryland Medical Center on its elite list for the past three years. The medical center also has been recognized by Thomson Reuters as one of the nation's top cardiovascular hospitals for the past two years, among other awards.
