C. WILLIAM BALKE NAMED HEAD OF THE DIVISION OF CARDIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

C. William Balke, M.D., a cardiologist and a leader in basic research on muscle function and heart failure, has been named head of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center.

"Dr. Balke has been a valuable member of our Division of Cardiology for the past 12 years, and is well respected nationally for his basic research on heart muscle function," says William Henrich, M.D., professor and chair of the department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

"Among his many strengths is his ability to mentor young physicians. Medical students and residents regard him as a fine teacher. We are very pleased that he will lead our Division of Cardiology as it moves forward toward even greater achievements," says Dr. Henrich.

"My goal in this position is to strengthen our clinical services, to fortify the educational mission and to enhance our research program," says Dr. Balke. "I am excited about the opportunity to build upon the strengths of this Division."

Dr. Balke is a professor of medicine and physiology and an attending physician in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Balke was also the assistant chief of service (chief resident) in medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Balke had clinical and research fellowships in cardiology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and clinical and research fellowships in cardiac electrophysiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiac physiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He holds two undergraduate degrees: one from the University of Pennsylvania and the other from the Haverford College in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Balke has written nine book chapters and over 60 journal articles. He is a member of the board and president elect of the mid-Atlantic affiliate of the American Heart Association, and a former president of the American Heart Association's Maryland Affiliate. He is also active with the Biophysical Society, the American College of Cardiology and serves as a consultant for the National Institutes of Health on projects related to heart disease.

Dr. Balke is a resident of the Roland Park area of Baltimore.
