UM SPORTS MEDICINE NAMED THE OFFICIAL PHYSICIANS FOR NEW BALTIMORE BAYHAWKS MAJOR LEAGUE LACROSSE TEAM

Games kick off June 7 at JHU'S Homewood Field

University of Maryland Sports Medicine has been named the official medical provider for the Baltimore Bayhawks, the major league lacrosse team that makes its official debut here on June 7 against the Long Island Lizards at JHU's Homewood Field. The Bayhawks are one of six teams kicking off the national Major League Lacrosse season. The team will join the Baltimore Ravens NFL football team and the University of Maryland Terrapins teams in selecting the University of Maryland Sports Medicine specialists as their official team physicians. The Ravens won the Super Bowl this year and the Terps basketball team made it to the Final Four NCAA tournament. The sports medicine team also cares for the University of Maryland's women's lacrosse team that won the NCAA championship for the seventh year in a row, and the UMBC men's lacrosse team.

"We'd heard wonderful things about University of Maryland Sports Medicine's care of professional athletes," says Gordon Boone, the Bayhawks general manager. "We're doing everything first-class for our players and wanted the best in orthopaedic and other medical coverage."

The University of Maryland Sports Medicine program provides state-of-the-art clinical care for athletes of all ages and skill levels. The program emphasizes injury prevention as well as specialized rehab and surgical options to treat sports-related injuries.

"The goal of University of Maryland Sports Medicine is to get patients back in action as quickly as possible," says Andrew Burgess, M.D., head of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "Primary care sports medicine specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists and athletic trainers are all involved in a patient's treatment plan. And, if specialty consultation is required, our team can call upon the vast resources of the University of Maryland Medical System."

"The University of Maryland Sports Medicine team is unique, not only in its capacity to offer the best in athletic player care, but with its association with the world-renowned R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center when it comes to critical care and trauma emergencies," says Dr. Burgess. He also points out that the sports medicine team members are all very active in sports themselves and have a colorful history in collegiate sports and in modern-day medical firsts.

Leigh Ann Curl, M.D., team physician for the Baltimore Ravens, is the first female physician ever to wear a Super Bowl ring. Andrew M. Tucker, M.D., head team physician for the Ravens and a nationally-recognized expert on sports nutrition, serves on two NFL advisory committees for concussions and performance enhancing agents such as anabolic steroids.

The sports medicine team is currently headquartered at Kernan Hospital, part of the University of Maryland Medical System. Later this summer, the sports medicine, physical therapy and orthopaedics programs will expand into central Baltimore County with the opening of an 18,000-square-foot facility at the new Texas Station building in Timonium. The facility will occupy the top floor of the building, which is located adjacent to Padonia Road and Beaver Dam Road, just off Interstate 83.

"Demand for our orthopaedic services continues to grow as people learn more about the excellent care our doctors have provided the Ravens since they came to Baltimore," says Morton I. Rapoport, M.D., president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System. "It's true that people who want the best sports medicine and orthopaedic care go where the pros go. In a very short period of time, the University of Maryland Sports Medicine program has built quite a reputation in both the professional and the collegiate sporting world."

University of Maryland Sports Medicine was chosen to care for the Baltimore Ravens at the team's inception five years ago and has been affiliated with the University of Maryland Terrapins, UMBC and Coppin State for the last three years.

The new Timonium facility will also offer comprehensive orthopaedic services with a full array of experts, including those who specialize in injuries and diseases involving the spine, hand, arm and shoulder, foot and ankle, as well as experts in total joint replacement, trauma reconstruction and pediatric orthopaedics.
