DRKOOP.COM ADDS UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL CENTER TO ITS COMMUNITY PARTNER PROGRAM

Partnership marks the first academic medical center to join the drkoop.com Community Partner Program

Austin, TX - October 1, 1999 -- drkoop.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: KOOP), a leading Internet healthcare information network led by Dr. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General, recently announced the addition of its first academic medical center, the University of Maryland Medical System, to the drkoop.com Community Partner Program. The Community Partner Program will provide jointly sponsored health information and on-line services to visitors at the University of Maryland Medical System web site (www.umm.edu).

In addition to participating in the Community Partner Program, the University of Maryland Medical System, in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, will host three "Spotlight Events" in drkoop.com's Interactive Community, an on-line forum where a selected health topic is discussed. During these three forums, visitors to the site can talk one-on-one with a faculty physician from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the fifth oldest medical school in the U.S. and first to build its own hospital for clinical instruction. These Spotlight Events reach millions of people due to drkoop.com's extensive network affiliations with AOL and the Go Network.

"We are honored to partner with the prestigious University of Maryland Medical System," said Dr. C. Everett Koop, chairman of drkoop.com. "We are very selective in choosing our Community Partners and feel the University of Maryland Medical System upholds the same patient empowerment focus as drkoop.com."

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit academic medical center that provides a full range of health care and is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Maryland School of Maryland. The University of Maryland Medical Center is a 724-bed hospital that includes the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, known for pioneering new cancer treatments, and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, a world leader in the treatment of patients with severe traumatic injuries. The Medical Center also has the nation's busiest kidney and pancreas transplant program.
