Bert W. O'Malley Jr., M.D., an expert in sinus surgery, head and neck tumors and delicate skull base surgery, has joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland Medical Center as professor of surgery and head of the Division of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. O'Malley has joint appointments in the Department of Surgery and the Greenebaum Cancer Center.
Previously, Dr. O'Malley was director of gene and molecular therapy and associate professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His research there focused on gene therapy in the treatment of cancer. He is board certified in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.
Dr. O'Malley's expertise makes him particularly valuable for our interdisciplinary programs," says Bruce Jarrell, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery. "Also, his ties to the local medical community will provide a strong base for our outreach throughout Maryland."
In collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery, Dr. O'Malley is establishing a center devoted to skull base surgery, offering cancer patients and others who need this type of delicate surgery a team of top specialists along with the latest computer-assisted imaging technology.
As a result of his expertise in growth factors research, Dr. O'Malley has a grant from NASA to find ways to maintain muscle mass during long trips into space. The goal is to develop strategies to combat the breakdown of muscles in a weightless environment before the Mars space mission in the year 2018.
Before coming to Baltimore in 1995, Dr. O'Malley was a clinical instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he completed a fellowship in head and neck oncology and cranial base surgery.
Dr. O'Malley earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He did residencies in general surgery at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Dr. O'Malley is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, American Society for Gravitational and Space Biology, and the Maryland Society of Otolaryngology. He is a founding member of the Cell Transplant Society.
As an author of many articles in peer-reviewed journals and a contributor to several textbooks, Dr. O'Malley also serves on the review boards for a number of professional journals.
