TOP ARTHRITIS SURGEON TO CHAIR UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS

Vincent D. Pellegrini, Jr., M.D.

Vincent D. Pellegrini, Jr., M.D., a renowned hand surgeon and expert in total joint replacement, has been named chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and chief of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Pellegrini comes to the University of Maryland from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, where he was professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. From 1986 to 1992, he was on the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Pellegrini will oversee orthopaedic research, education and patient care at the University of Maryland Medical Center (which includes the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center) and Kernan Hospital. His department also includes the orthopaedic surgeons who are the team physicians for the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens football team, as well as the student athletic teams of the University of Maryland College Park, Coppin State and UMBC.

Dr. Pellegrini also will be named the James Lawrence Kernan Professor of Orthopaedics, which is an endowed chair funded by a $3 million gift from the Kernan Hospital Endowment Board to the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

"An educator and clinician of Dr. Pellegrini's stature will help us to recruit and retain the most talented orthopaedic surgeons and researchers," says Donald E. Wilson, M.D., M.A.C.P, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean, School of Medicine. "His expertise will benefit our patients and our medical students."

"Dr. Pellegrini will provide dynamic leadership for our extensive and diverse orthopaedics program," says Stephen C. Schimpff, M.D., CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center. "Our orthopaedic surgeons treat a wide range of conditions in both adults and children, including traumatic injuries, total joint replacement, sports-related injuries and congenital deformities," Dr. Schimpff adds. Dr. Pellegrini will focus much of his effort into further developing the orthopaedic services at Kernan Hospital, which he hopes will become the region's premier orthopaedic institution.

Dr. Pellegrini received his M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. He did his residency in surgery at the Hartford Hospital and a residency in orthopaedics at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Pellegrini is a member of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Osteoarthritis Research Society, Hip Society, and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He has received numerous awards, including the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society and the Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellowship from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
