EXPERT IN PEDIATRIC G.I. DISORDERS IS CHOSEN TO HEAD UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS

Jay A. Perman, M.D., a distinguished specialist in pediatric gastroenterology, has been named professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of pediatrics at the University of Maryland Medical System.

Dr. Perman comes to the University of Maryland from the Medical College of Virginia, where he was chairman of pediatrics and medical director of its Children's Medical Center. Previously, he was director of pediatric gastroenterology/nutrition and vice chair of pediatric clinical affairs at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. An expert in pediatric G.I. disorders, particularly feeding disorders and failure to thrive, Dr. Perman has distinguished himself as both a medical educator and clinician.

"Jay Perman is a dynamic, energetic leader who will build on the Department of Pediatrics' many strengths. We have tremendous confidence in his abilities, both as a clinician and as a chairman," says Donald E. Wilson, M.D., M.A.C.P., dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

The University of Maryland Department of Pediatrics ranks among the nation's top ten publicly funded pediatric departments in direct NIH funding.

"Dr. Perman's considerable experience in Maryland and his fine reputation among area pediatricians provides a strong foundation to help us strengthen referrals in pediatric specialties," says Morton I. Rapoport, M.D., president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System. "He has expertise and a commitment to building comprehensive health services for children and adolescents with chronic diseases and disabilities."

Dr. Perman earned his undergraduate and medical degrees in Chicago at Northwestern University and he completed a residency there at Children's Memorial Hospital. He also trained in Boston, completing fellowships in pediatric gastroenterology at Children's Hospital, part of Harvard Medical School.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Perman has written more than 40 book chapters and scores of journal articles. He is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology and was listed in The Best Doctors in America.

Dr. Perman sits on committees of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and American Academy of Pediatrics and recently co-chaired the Development, Nutrition and Aging section of the American Gastroenterological Association. He has been a referee on more than a dozen medical journals, was associate editor of Progress in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and served on the editorial board of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Perman is a resident of Cockeysville.
