UMMC Statement About Potentially Misleading AP Alternative Therapies Article

Don't be fooled by the "mumbo jumbo" and accompanying sensational headlines about a June 7 Associated Press story on how alternative medicine is going mainstream. It's true that the University of Maryland Medical Center's doctors and nurses are open-minded enough to offer patients relaxation therapies, such as Reiki, alongside all of the proven medical treatments.

The goal is to help patients feel more comfortable and address their emotional as well as physical needs. These strategies produce no harm and some patients find them to be helpful. However, the University of Maryland Medical Center does not give patients unproven herbal or dietary supplements. Unfortunately, readers may have the wrong impression from the AP article.
