NEW DIRECTOR OF PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY JOINS THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN

Mubadda A. Salim, M.D., an expert in heart rhythm abnormalities, has been named director of pediatric cardiology at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children and has joined the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He comes to Baltimore after ten years at the University of Tennessee and Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, where he headed the Pediatric Cardiology Department for almost two years.

"Dr. Salim is a strong leader, with excellent interpersonal skills and strong working relationships with pediatricians in private practice. He was just what we were looking for," says Jay Perman, M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children and professor and chair of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Salim was born and educated in Israel, and completed his medical degree at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. Following that, he came to Baltimore where he spent three years as a pediatric intern and resident at St. Agnes Hospital. "I consider Baltimore my home away from home, and my wife grew up here, so we are pleased to be back in Baltimore," says Dr. Salim.

Following his residency, Dr. Salim moved to Tennessee where he completed his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Tennessee and Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. In pursuing his interest in pediatric electrophysiology, he spent six months of his fellowship at the Medical Center of South Carolina in Charleston.

"Electrophysiology is Dr. Salim's sub-specialty. He brings to this department great knowledge on disorders of the heart's rhythm and he is very interested in syncope, which is fainting spells that occur in children and teenagers," adds Dr. Perman.

In the next two years, the Pediatric Cardiology Division at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children will be expanding with several more doctors and a basic research scientist joining the team. "Dr. Salim will have a very important leadership role in building this division," says Dr. Perman.

"Our goal is to create a division that is recognized nationally for its excellent patient care and advances in research. We want to provide the most cutting-edge treatments, including invasive and non-invasive procedures, for all pediatric patients from those in-utero to young adults," says Dr. Salim.
