In a move that will give area residents greater access to primary care physicians and specialized health care services, University of Maryland Medicine and the Anne Arundel Health System, Inc., have formed a partnership to provide those services to residents of Anne Arundel County. University of Maryland Medicine is a collaboration between the University of Maryland Medical System and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
The joint services will be provided at a new facility at Shipley's Choice owned by University of Maryland Medicine. The 30,000 square foot, two-story office building will be located on the southeast corner of Benfield Boulevard and Veterans Highway in Anne Arundel County. Situated just off Route 97, the facility will be of particular benefit to the county's northern and western communities, including Millersville, Severna Park, Crofton and Odenton. "We are pleased to be associated with University of Maryland Medicine on a project that has such obvious advantages for residents of Anne Arundel County," says Martin L. Doordan, President of Anne Arundel Health System. "This link with a major academic teaching center fits perfectly with our mission to improve the health status of our community by expanding our service area. It is the kind of strategic partnership with other organizations which we are exploring in order to better respond to community needs."
"The partnership combines the best of community and academic medicine," says Morton I. Rapoport, M.D., President and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System. "This will provide patients with another convenient location to see their community doctors while allowing them access to specialists from the University of Maryland without having to travel to Baltimore. This program builds on the wonderful reputation the Anne Arundel Health System has established for quality care and great customer service. And it capitalizes on our strengths in advanced medicine."
The new facility, expected to open in early spring, will include an urgent care center, as well as primary care offices staffed by Anne Arundel Health System physicians, including pediatricians, internists, obstetricians and gynecologists. University of Maryland medical services are expected to include pediatric specialties, such as gastroenterology, cardiology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, allergy immunization and behavioral specialties. Adult services will include specialized women's health programs, such as infertility, high risk obstetrics and gynecological oncology. Other adult services will be added in the future based on anticipated health needs.
The Shipley's Choice facility will be a full-service medical office complex, with a NeighborCare pharmacy, laboratory services, and a state-of-the art imaging center. The imaging center is a joint venture between Anne Arundel Medical Center and University of Maryland Medicine, and it will include an open MRI, a CT scan, ultrasound, mammography, and fluoroscopy.
"This is an opportunity for both of our institutions to build on our integrated delivery systems as managed care companies demand that health care institutions provide convenient, low cost care for patients at geographically dispersed centers," says Donald E. Wilson, M.D., M.A.C.P, Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "As the partnership continues, new services will be developed and provided. This is an important step towards developing an even stronger relationship with Anne Arundel Health System and its medical staff. Having a partner like Anne Arundel Health System just reinforces our conviction to affiliate with the best community hospitals."
Joseph D. Moser, M.D., President of the Medial Staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center says the alliance has many advantages. "This partnership allows us to bring to Anne Arundel County highly specialized care such as pediatric sub-specialties, that we currently cannot provide."
The Shipley's Choice medical complex is part of University of Maryland Medicine's network of primary and specialty care sites located throughout Baltimore and Central Maryland.
Anne Arundel Health System includes an acute care facility in downtown Annapolis as well as a women's health pavilion, outpatient surgery center, professional office building and community health center located at its Medical Park campus just off Route 50 near the Annapolis Mall. The Health System's Board of Directors recently approved a plan to consolidate all services at the Medical Park campus, a project which would involve the construction of a new inpatient facility there. Completion of the project is targeted for the year 2002, which will mark the health care organization's 100th anniversary.
