KERNAN HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NEW CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER
Dr. Roy T. Smoot, Jr., to take CMO post as Dr. Michael Jablonover becomes CEO of Kernan
Kernan Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Hospital in Woodlawn, the largest provider of rehabilitation care in Maryland, has announced the appointment of Roy T. Smoot, Jr., MD, FACS, as vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer.
Dr. Smoot, who recently served as the chief medical officer at Maryland General Hospital, replaces Michael Jablonover, MD, MBA, FACP, Kernan's current vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer, who will be assuming leadership of Kernan as its chief executive officer. Dr. Jablonover and Dr. Smoot will assume their new positions on January 18.
Both Kernan Hospital and Maryland General Hospital are part of the University of Maryland Medical System, an 11-hospital network located throughout Maryland.
Dr. Smoot, who is board-certified in general surgery, has previously served as the chief medical officer of Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn, North Carolina; director of bariatric surgery at the Upper Chesapeake Health System; vice president and management partner of Nanticoke Surgical Instruments; president of Nanticoke Diagnostics; and partner of the Mid-Delmarva Breast Center.
Dr. Smoot completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he served as chief resident. A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he is also a member of the American College of Physician Executives and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
