UM MEDICAL SYSTEM RANKS AMONG TOP HOSPITALS IN 6 CATEGORIES BY US NEWS & WORLD REPORT

The University of Maryland Medical System has been ranked among the nation's top 42 hospitals in six categories, in the latest list of America's Best Hospitals. This prestigious recognition puts the medical system among the best hospitals nationwide for these six specialties. Overall, the medical system's ranking within specialty areas improved and six specialties were recognized, compared to five last year.

"We are pleased to be recognized by US News & World Report for these six outstanding programs," says Morton I. Rapoport, M.D., president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System. "To be ranked among the nation's best in six categories is quite an honor. These programs and others at the medical system are headed by nationally-known leaders in their field who have dedicated themselves to building top-notch programs," says Dr. Rapoport. Out of the 1,800 hospitals nationwide which provide care for the most complex medical cases, the medical system ranked 23rd for Urology, 27th for Pulmonary Disease; 30th for Orthopedics; 33rd for Neurology; 39th for AIDS; and 40th for Gastroenterolgy.

Any institution listed among the top 42 medical centers in any specialty should be considered a leading center, according to US News & World Report.

The magazine's rankings for 13 of the 17 specialties are based on reputation among doctors and various medical data. Those specialties are AIDS, cancer, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pulmonary disease, rheumatology and urology. Rankings for the other four specialties are based solely on the medical center's reputation in that specialty: ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry and rehabilitation.
