The UMMC Professional Practice Model

The UMMC Professional Practice Model defines what it means to “Advance the practice of nursing, everyday” at UMMC. This Professional Practice Model describes our professional values and the healthy environment in which we practice, our professional relationships with colleagues as we collaboratively focus on a Commitment to Excellence and our partnership with the University of Maryland School of Nursing.

UMMC nurses, through the Relationship Based Care delivery model, focus on what matters most: caring and healing relationships at the point of care. They are empowered through a nursing governance structure to make decisions and build professional accountability and they practice in an environment in which innovation, creativity and scholarly productivity are encouraged, recognized, and rewarded.

Our Professional Practice Model, adapted from Hoffart and Woods (1996)1, contains the values, structures, and processes that support registered nurse control of the delivery of nursing care and the environment in which care is delivered. The center of the model is the patient and family. There are five components in our model: professional values, our patient care delivery system, management approach, compensation and rewards, and professional relationships. The model is viewed as a six-stranded rope, with each strand representing one element of the model. When the strands are coiled together, the rope is stronger than any of the strands alone.
