UM Orthopaedics Recognized as a Blue Distinction Center

UM Orthopaedics Recognized as a Blue Distinction Center by Blue Cross Blue Shield Association

The National Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, in cooperation with local CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, has designated University of Maryland Orthopaedics as a Blue Distinction Center for Hip and Knee Replacement as well as for Spine Surgery. This national recognition acknowledges the department's commitment to quality patient care and achievement of excellent outcomes.

Selection criteria for determining which medical centers receive this recognition are established by Blue Cross Blue Shield Association in collaboration with expert physicians and medical organizations' recommendations. Medical centers are judged on patient results and outcomes, treatment expertise, procedure volume, structure and process. Those centers that demonstrate the best overall outcomes, few medical complications, few readmissions and higher survival rates are recognized as Blue Distinction Centers.

Blue Distinction Centers for Hip and Knee Replacement are recognized based upon their ability to provide comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services, including total knee replacement and total hip replacement surgeries. At University of Maryland Orthopaedics, our team provides an extensive range of surgical, medical, physical and rehabilitative care to patients in our state-of-the-art facilities. Many of our physicians are board-certified orthopaedic surgeons who have received fellowship training in total joint replacement.

Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery are recognized for demonstrating a commitment to quality care and overall better outcomes for spine surgery patients. At University of Maryland Orthopaedics, we use advanced minimally invasive surgery techniques to treat a variety of spine conditions, which results in shortened hospital stays for patients and overall faster recovery.
