Orthopaedic Elective for Students Interested in a Career in Primary Care/Emergency Medicine

The orthopaedic elective offers students an opportunity to learn about the evaluation and management of orthopaedic outpatients with a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. This rotation will focus on the outpatient setting, with students rotating through specialty clinics within the Department of Orthopaedics, including trauma, spine, sports medicine, shoulder and elbow, hand, foot and ankle, and hip and knee reconstruction. The student will rotate on a daily basis, gaining exposure and education through a breadth of orthopaedic pathology. The educational experience will focus on history and physical exam of the orthopaedic patient, proper imaging and interpretation and outpatient management of orthopaedic problems.

The student will be expected to attend all Department conferences as well as some of the service specific conferences. On-call responsibilities are an essential part of orthopaedic practice, and students on the elective are required to take in-house calls once per week at the University of Maryland.
