Orthopaedic Sub-Internship

The Orthopaedic Sub-Internship offers students an opportunity to acquire and demonstrate advanced clinical responsibilities at the level of an intern with the context of a hospitalized orthopaedic patient population. The majority of the patients will be post-operative following recent spine, hip or knee reconstructive surgery and are admitted to the orthopaedic inpatient unit. The Sub-Internship will provide an educational curriculum that emphasizes the teaching of the fundamental concepts of patient care. The sub-intern will be assigned a faculty mentor for the entire rotation based on the patient group for which he/she is responsible (spine, hip and knee or VA). The sub-intern may accompany his/her faculty mentor to the operating room and will function as the primary point of contact for all care issues for these specific patients. The sub-intern will attend all Orthopaedic Department conferences, specialty specific conferences for their team and morning trauma intake conference. The sub-intern will take in-house calls at lease once per week with the call day established by the orthopaedic team to maximize the sub-intern’s educational experience.

The goals of the sub-intern throughout this experience are as follows:
