Total Ankle Arthroplasty

Total Ankle Arthroplasty is an exciting new option for the treatment of ankle arthritis. Like artificial hips and knees, the total ankle replaces both sides of the joint with metal parts, and a plastic spacer is placed between the metal parts to allow movement.

The technology, engineering, and understanding of the ankle joint has advanced considerably in the past 10 years, and today's implants are much better than those tried in the 70s and 80s. Ankle replacement offers the potential for excellent pain relief, improved function, and protection of the surrounding joints from the additional stress that comes with a joint fusion, the previous standard for treating ankle arthritis.

However, total ankle replacements are not for everyone. Younger and very active patients may do better with a fusion because a replacement may wear out too fast. Patients with severe deformities or prior infection may also be better served with an ankle fusion.

We have the expertise to give you an honest assessment of your disease and the best treatment for you. We have experience with all the current total ankle replacements and can choose the implant that best suits your individual needs.
