The University of Maryland Medical Center Department of Pathology offers a one-year ACGME-approved fellowship in Cytopathology. The fellowship is based at the University of Maryland Medical Center, a 731-bed tertiary care center located in the heart of downtown Baltimore, in the attractive Inner Harbor area, minutes from Camden Yards.
The Division of Cytopathology diagnoses over 10,000 cytology cases per year, including 4700 gynecologic cytology cases and 5600 non-gynecologic cases. This includes over 800 fine needle aspiration cases per year, with immediate evaluation for adequacy by a cytopathologist in nearly all of them, and a large and growing number of Pathologist-performed fine needle aspirations. The program offers access to an outstanding range of cytologic cases, representing all of the major organ systems and specimen types typically encountered in the practice of cytopathology, with particular strengths in gastrointestinal (including pancreatobiliary and hepatic), pulmonary, head and neck, and transplant cytology.
The Cytopathology fellow will devote the bulk of the year to rotation on the Cytopathology service, and will be expected to render a preliminary diagnosis on all cytology cases, and perform all pathologist-performed FNA procedures and rapid evaluations for adequacy under the supervision of the attending pathologist. In addition, the fellow will have an introductory rotation and rotations in molecular pathology and transplant pathology, as well as several months of elective time, which may be used for additional UMMC Cytology rotations, cytology electives at outside sites, surgical pathology electives, and/or research. Training in pathology informatics and laboratory management will be integrated throughout the program. Training will be complemented by an extensive collection of glass slide study sets, a series of didactic lectures by the faculty, a fellow journal club, and opportunities for formal and informal teaching of residents by the fellow.
