
Located minutes from the Baltimore Orioles Stadium at Camden Yards and the multiple award-winning Inner Harbor, the University of Maryland Medical Center offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Hematopathology in the Department of Pathology. The program is highly integrated with microscopic morphology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular approaches for the diagnosis of hematological diseases. The Department of Pathology accessions approximately 12,800 anatomic pathology specimens annually. There are approximately 1300 bone marrows and 1250 lymph nodes per year. The hematopathology service also review 200-300 consult cases yearly. The Clinical Pathology Laboratories perform close to 4,000,000 clinical laboratory tests and procedures per year including approximately 550,000 hematology and coagulation studies. In addition, the fellows can rotate to the National Cancer Institute for elective rotation with Drs. Elaine Jaffe and Stefania Pittaluga, where approximately 1,600 lymph nodes per year are accessioned.
This fellowship is typically for one year. Second year is available to qualified fellows who will devote an additional year to research and pursue an academic career, with the approval of program director. Besides the clinical activities, the faculties have strong interests in both basic and clinical research with NIH and other extramurally funded projects.
The Department of Pathology is intimately involved with the clinical hematology/oncology staff at the Greenebaum Cancer Center in the care of patients. The Health Sciences Library has more than 200,000 bound volumes and receives more than 3,500 journals.
