About the University of Maryland Hospital for Children

Child is drawing a picture

In providing the best possible care for children of all ages, the University of Maryland Hospital for Children (UMHC) takes the slogan "Children Are Our Future" very seriously.

Recognized statewide and regionally as a center of excellence for children with critical illnesses and complex, chronic conditions, UMHC combines state-of-the-art medicine with family-centered care.

Children have specific physiological and emotional needs that differ from adults'. That is why the UMHC has its own pharmacy and pediatric emergency room, both run by highly trained personnel.

Located within the University of Maryland Medical Center, our "Hospital within a Hospital" is able to rely on the expertise of specialists throughout the Medical Center.

In addition to our clinical resources, UMHC is a national leader in children's health care research. Our highly respected and well-funded research activities allow us to explore the nature of various childhood illnesses.

None of what we do would matter, however, if our patients and their families couldn't access our services. In an effort to thoroughly serve our patients, nurse practitioners are available around-the-clock to answer any questions.

A Hospital Within a Hospital

With pediatric floors at the University of Maryland Medical Center and at Mercy Hospital, UMHC is as much a state of mind as it is a physical place. Although self-sufficient in many ways, UMHC is able to draw upon the extended resources of the University of Maryland Medical System. UMHC staff work closely with many other departments, especially psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, emergency medicine and surgery.

Everything about UMHC has been designed with our young patients' interests and comfort in mind. From the colorful butterflies in the Medical Center's fifth-floor lobby to the rainbow fish that decorate the specialty outpatient clinic, UMHC has a friendly atmosphere that children can appreciate.

Easy Access

When parents and family doctors need answers fast, they don't have to wait. A UMHC nurse practitioner is always a phone call away to handle referrals and any questions parents or pediatricians may have.

Children don't have to come all the way to the Medical Center, to Mercy Hospital or even to their doctors' offices to receive high quality care. We have professionals that provide home care services to children in need. For children with feeding and rehabilitative needs, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, which is part of the University of Maryland Medical System, offers extensive outpatient services.

Finally, the Maryland ExpressCare for Kids shuttle, available 24 hours a day, makes it easy for children to take advantage of UMHC's various services. The shuttle transports children to all of the facilities within the University of Maryland Medical System.

Family-Centered Care

Family-Centered Care

Pediatric care doesn't stop with the child, but instead must involve the whole family. That is why children are treated on an outpatient basis whenever possible. Outpatient care makes it easier for UMHC to accommodate families, help children maintain their normal routines and integrate families into treatment.
