Every student needs pencils and paper when beginning the new school year, but students with diabetes will need to bring several more supplies to school.

Children with diabetes must always be prepared. They may require medical supplies like insulin, a blood glucose testing device and snacks to help maintain blood-sugar levels.

"It's important to plan ahead," said Debra Ostrowski, R.N., a certified diabetes educator at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. "We recommend that parents speak with the school nurse, teachers and principal before the school year starts. Parents may need to educate the school staff about diabetes."

Ostrowski adds that is quite important for every student with diabetes to have a 504 plan. A 504 Plan is a legal document that is used by the student, parents and school. It allows for students with diabetes (as well as other medical conditions) to participate in school activities, while guaranteeing that their medical needs will be met. This plan also establishes guidelines in case of an emergency.
