The Children’s Heart Program at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital is committed to recruiting physicians from centers of excellence across the country. With the addition of the newest team members, Maryland families no longer have to leave the state for the most advanced pediatric heart treatment.

Dr. Geoffrey Rosenthal, Director of the Children’s Heart Program, chooses only team members who “practice medicine as a form of friendship.” He selects teammates who “approach patients with love in their hearts, even at 2:30 in the morning.”

Pediatric cardiac surgeon, Sunjay Kaushal, M.D., Ph.D., director of pediatric surgery at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, joins the team from Johns Hopkins Hospital where he also completed his residency and medical school. He completed a pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital and a second fellowship in pediatric cardiovascular surgery at University of Michigan-Mott Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kaushal specializes in pediatric cardiovascular thoracic surgery, neonatal surgery, valve repair, adults with congenital heart disease and research on children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and cardiomyopathy.

Non-invasive imaging specialist, Alicia Chaves, M.D., believes part of being a doctor is being an educator as well. “Educating families and reassuring them is part of what we do.” Dr. Chaves received her medical degree from the University of South Florida and completed her residency in pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Yale University and a second in advanced pediatric cardiac non-invasive imaging at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Chaves specializes in diagnosing fetal heart disease and caring for the baby before and after birth.

Electrophysiologist, Sudhir Vashist, M.D., was a practicing pediatrician before he became specialized in pediatric cardiology, specifically electrophysiology, which is used to help children’s heart teams search for and identify heart rhythms and abnormalities. Dr. Vashist received his medical degree from Maulana Axad Medical College at the University of Delhi, India, and completed his residency in pediatrics at Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center and Maulana Azad Medical College.

He completed his fellowship in pediatric electrophysiology and pediatric cardiology at Washington University School of Medicine/St. Louis Children's Hospital. Dr. Vashist specializes in caring for children with heart palpitations, fainting, chest pain and exercise-induced symptoms.

Pediatric cardiologist, Phat Pham, M.D., is excited to apply his love for pediatric interventional cardiology in the pediatric hybrid OR suite, calling the suite “unmatched in the mid-Atlantic.” Dr. Pham is interested in treating children with complex medical problems. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington and completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. He completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Oregon Health Science University and a fellowship in pediatric interventional cardiology at the University of California San Francisco.
