A little bit about myself...
Born in NYC, my parents moved to Stony Brook on Long Island, NY when I was three years old. I loved growing up in suburbia, and decided to attend college there. I wanted to combine my love of science with my desire to help people, so I enrolled in an MD-PhD program at NYU School of Medicine. My thesis work was on eye movements using goldfish as an experimental model animal (http://owendebowy.tripod.com/owen_debowy_phd_thesis.pdf). I think this is why one of my favorite places in Baltimore is the aquarium. Any questions on raising or maintaining goldfish, I’m your man.
Why Maryland?
Having grown up and lived my entire life around New York City, I am frequently asked by the faculty why I chose to complete my residency at the University of Maryland. I guess the answer is that the residency match is really a chance to find the correct fit. The right people who you think that you will get along with and don’t mind spending long hours with. A program where you believe you will thrive and grow, however you are confident that if you struggle, you will be supported. I believed then and I believe now that the program at the University of Maryland is all of those things.
What do I do in my free time?
I love quiz shows, and I had auditioned for Jeopardy twice in my life, but never made it past the second round. In college, I used 9 of my 15 minutes of fame, appearing on the short-lived “Remember This” game show with Al Roker.
My other hobbies are playing with technology which recently has entailed working on my always incomplete web pages, particularly the medical PDA software section (http://owen.debowy.googlepages.com and http://owendebowy.tripod.com).
