A little bit about myself...
Why Med-Peds? It was hard to decide. I really like primary care, and I like diversity in patient populations. Also, my husband (doing categorical internal medicine) and I plan on working internationally and a lot of people seeking medical care are young children. Family medicine and categorical internal medicine were fields I considered for a while, but I liked the intensity of inpatient medicine and the somewhat more analytical way of going about things, and wanted to be able to see a range of ages so I decided on med-peds.
Specific area of interest: I want to work in primary and secondary prevention of diabetes in resource-poor areas.
Why Maryland? My husband and I really liked the people we met during our interviews here, and also liked the patient population. Unfortunately, there is a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Baltimore, but we will get more experience with a disease we're likely to see a lot of later in our careers. The population here is diverse, and the University hospital serves a major underserved population. There are opportunities to be involved in a variety of outreaches.
