The UMMS Foundation and the University of Maryland Children's Hospital recently celebrated the grand opening of Children’s Cancer Foundation Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit. Thanks to a $520,000 donation from the Children’s Cancer Foundation, the University of Maryland Children's Hospital has eight brand-new inpatient rooms.
Bright, colorful murals decorate the wall in each of the new rooms.
Other highlights of the new rooms include:
And when children are lying in bed, they don’t just see a ceiling. They get a view overhead of the outside natural world because when they look up, there is a glass piece that has realistic images of trees, with a royal blue sky background.
The rooms have brand new beds and fold- out chairs for family members.
Thanks to the generosity of the Children’s Cancer Foundation, the Hospital for Children now has a Child Life Specialist dedicated to Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The Child Life Specialist, Becky Halagarda, helps to reduce the stress and anxiety that many children experience in the hospital. Child life programs promote optimum development of children and their families, to maintain normal living patterns and to minimize psychological trauma.
The University of Maryland Children's Hospital is grateful for the Children Cancer Foundation’s continued support.
