"One of the major draws to Maryland was that the program was interested in what I was..."

Delon Brennen, M.D.

As a student at Penn State, I had gotten advice from other students and residents who had seen the program to come and take a look. So I decided to spend an elective month in Allergy and Immunology to get a better sense for the place. My experience during the month swayed my decision to rank Maryland high on my list. From the receptionists, to the social workers, to the residents and faculty, everyone made me feel welcome. I was treated as a colleague - everyone wanted to know what I thought about the patients we saw. And help was there for the asking.

During the month, I spent some time at the various teaching rounds and conferences. The housestaff really interacted well with the faculty. At morning report, everyone was encouraged to talk regardless of rank - there was no big hierarchy.

One of the key factors in drawing me to Maryland was that the program was interested in what I was interested in. I grew up in the Bahamas and feel a deep commitment to go back and practice there once my training is complete. I’ve been involved in designing some forms to prompt physicians to do preventive care in the emergency room setting since most children only see a physician when acute problems arise. My hope is to facilitate getting preventive services for these kids. The people at Maryland are excited about what I’m doing and the potential contributions to the health care of my country. They’ve encouraged me to take advantage of an international health elective during my residency in order to continue my project. At this point in my career, I’m interested in doing a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship which I know is competitive but I feel that Maryland will put me in good stead to secure a spot.
