“Maryland’s program is supportive of residents having a life outside of residency.”
Coming to this program felt like coming home. Prior to starting medical school at University of Maryland, I worked in the department of pediatrics here as a nurse. Because of this, I knew a lot of faculty first hand. In fact, many faculty I knew as residents. I have been able to see time and time again the quality of this program through first hand experience and not by advertising.
Residency is so much more fun than medical school. I have been pleasantly surprised by my level of autonomy as an intern. During my first day of internship in the pediatric emergency department, I was making treatment decisions – with supervision of course! Maryland encourages residents to take responsibility for their own education. As such, we establish yearly learning objectives and discuss our progress on them with faculty mentors. I know that once I am in practice on my own, the emphasis on self-education will serve me well as there will no longer be anyone making sure that I am learning.
Faculty that I interact with here teach and like to teach. Resident education is a priority and not their secondary responsibility. Additionally, I enjoy learning from my colleagues in residency. My classmates have a very diverse background. We have many in the program that have not gone straight through college and medical school. As a result, I can share my experiences and benefit from those of others. I believe that a lot of what is taught in residency is how to be responsible and function as professionals. These skills translate well from other environments and backgrounds.
I was a part time resident initially. No other program that I applied to was willing to discuss the issue of part time residency. In fact, more often than not, I was not even able to reach a residency director for a conversation about part time options. I have 2 young children and being part time allowed me more time with them. Maryland’s program is supportive of residents having a life outside of residency. I was even encouraged to make work life balance one of my learning objectives for this year.
