"I want to give back to the community and Maryland will help me do just that."
Growing up in Baltimore City, I had early exposure to many facets of the health field. I was always interested in volunteering and being involved in community activities. As I became more involved with the community, I realized that University of Maryland played a major role in many of the local outreach programs. Early in medical school, I was researching different residency programs and I became aware of the various community programs offered at Maryland. Even more impressive were the great things I heard about what was offered in the Behavioral and Developmental Program. So I came and spent an elective month here. My impressions were confirmed by what I saw and what I heard from students and residents. The residents were happy; not only did they feel that they were learning a great deal, they truly felt like a major part of the learning process. They seemed connected to the University and the community that they served. This is very important to me. I want to give back to my community and Maryland will help me to do just that. I wasn’t willing to put my community activities on hold until after residency.
I’d like to leave you with some thoughts about the whole match process. When looking into programs I suggest that you don’t take them at face value. Talk to the residents. Talk to the students who are going to medical school there- they have great insight into what’s going on. And talk to the key faculty who will have a major role in your learning. It worked for me!
