"As I looked at other programs I came to value Maryland's program more."

Amaly Rahman

When applying for residency I wasn't sure where I wanted to be. I interviewed at about 15 places ranging from small programs to free standing children's hospitals. I found myself comparing every place to Maryland and I came to value what I had here (since this is where I went to med school). There are so many reasons I wanted to do my residency here! I liked being part of a bigger hospital system and interacting with colleagues from other disciplines. I liked the feeling of being the expert on children when put with the surgeons and the ob residents. One thing I realized more fourth year when I did my away electives was how much our teams really work together. And this program is big enough to offer diversity and yet not so big that I feel like I’m lost in the crowd. Personal interactions are so important to me – I didn't like the feeling of attendings not knowing me by name, or going to morning report where no one would miss me.

Now that I’m here, as an intern, I can tell you I made the right decision. I spent my first month at Mercy, our community hospital. It's a nice contrast to Maryland because it works more like a community practice. I like the different learning environments varying from health supervision at Mercy clinic to the intensity of the NICU & PICU. The pathology and diversity is just great. We're busy here but there still is time to read and think, and actually learn about your patients. And everyday I am more and more amazed by our attendings. They really are sincere people who want to teach you. Here there is a feeling of family, and when they teach, they at times also tease which keeps a smile on your face; education tempered with affection. The faculty inspires you and they serve as role models in their knowledge, kindness and humor. This place is really a well-kept secret that will give me all the opportunities and education I will need for my future, while steering me through any path I wish to travel.
