"Commitment to education and particularly the "hands-on" kind that you get at Maryland..."

David Adams, M.D., Ph.D.

My background in molecular biotechnology led me to pursue a fellowship in genetics but for residency training I was looking for a program with a strong emphasis on general pediatrics. I see residency as a time to learn to become an excellent generalist, a time to put aside at least the bench research and focus on clinical medicine. A commitment to education, particularly the "hands-on" kind that you get at Maryland, is important to me. The fact that the entire administrative hierarchy is accessible is very appealing. Every member of the administration, including the Chairman, demonstrated a commitment to setting aside time for teaching.

Of all the programs I visited, I liked the curriculum here the best. While the Residency Review Committee has homogenized curricula to some extent, I found differences at Maryland that were important to me. I think the strong emphasis on behavior and development, even beyond what's required, is critical regardless of what you choose to do in pediatrics. I also liked the community preceptorship. It provides both a contrasting practice setting and a mentoring relationship with a practicing physician. The community is where pediatrics really happens.

The size of this program was right for me. I wanted a program where I would be busy and yet have time to read and attend conferences. I'm working hard but I'm learning and I'm enjoying my interaction with my colleagues.
