"Here, advocacy and community health are part of the program...unique to Maryland."
Before I began interviewing I had read some of the literature and got to know the names of some of the people in the fields of adolescent medicine and HIV. I became particularly interested in an adolescent HIV intervention that was taking place on a national level at 16 sites throughout the country and Maryland was one of them. So I gladly accepted an interview here.
The thing that struck me the most during my interview was how this program fits into the community. I have a big interest in public health and here I can actually get out into the schools and the community agencies that advocate for children as part of my training. Here, advocacy and community health are part of the program- not something I need to find time to do on the weekends. As I continued through my interviews, I found that level of community involvement to be unique to Maryland.
Now that I’m here I’m finding that I really enjoy my colleagues. My class has already started meeting on Friday nights for dinner. And I get a lot of support from all the senior residents- they’re overwhelmingly helpful. When I have a long post call “to do” list, I start at the top and my senior starts at the bottom to help me get done my work. In some ways the limitation of work duty hours has fostered great camaraderie here. We all help each other and we are learning how to transfer patient information efficiently and effectively to provide the best care for our patients.
