On September 13, 2001, a "wall-breaking" ceremony was held to mark the beginning of the construction of a Ronald McDonald House Charities of Baltimore lounge and playroom in the University of Maryland Hospital for Children.
The special event featured many honored guests, including Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Senator Clarence Mitchell IV, Senior Vice President of Allfirst Bank, L. Michael Riley, Stephen Schimpff, M.D., CEO of University of Maryland Medical Center, several of our young patients, and of course, Ronald McDonald himself.
For almost 20 years the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Baltimore and the University of Maryland Medical Center have worked together to enhance the care and comfort of sick children and their families.
The lounge and playroom will be the first Ronald McDonald House Charities hospital-based rooms built in the State of Maryland. The rooms will be completed this winter and will provide a place for parents, siblings and relatives of patients to relax, take a shower, log onto a computer and spend time together as a family.
