Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy
The University of Maryland Breast Reconstruction service offers all of the
modern options for reconstruction after mastectomy. The use of implants versus
autologous tissue can be discussed and an informed decision by the patient can
be made on an individual basis depending on each patient’s needs and
desires.
All varieties of breast reconstruction options are available, including:
- saline implants
- silicone implants
- expanders
- TRAM flaps (taking tissue from the abdomen and using it to reconstruct the breast)
- free TRAM flaps
- muscle-sparing TRAM
- DIEP (perforator based) flaps and other less commonly used flaps as well
