Back pain is one of the most common health problems in the United States, with eight out of 10 Americans experiencing an aching back at some point in their lives.

Dr. Daniel Gelb, an orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center who specializes in treating spine disorders, discusses some of the causes of back pain, including strained muscles, ruptured discs and degenerative conditions, such a spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal which puts pressure on nerves in the back.

Speaking with Karen Warmkessel, Dr. Gelb, who is co-director of the University of Maryland Spine Center and an associate professor of orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, also talks about treatment options - from simple over-the-counter pain medications to the latest surgical procedures. Dr. Gelb offers tips on how you can take care of your back and avoid common injuries.
