Celiac disease is a genetic disorder affecting children and adults. It is more common that many people had previously believed and it causes a wide range of serious health problems. People with celiac disease are unable to eat foods that contain gluten, which is found in wheat and other grains. For many years, researchers have been working diligently to find the cause of this disease and better treatment options. Currently, the cure is to strictly avoid eating any gluten-containing foods.

Speaking with Becky Ceraul, Dr. Alessio Fasano, a pediatric gastroenterologist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Hospital for Children, discusses celiac disease -- its causes, symptoms and treatment options.
