Head and neck cancers include cancers of the throat, mouth, larynx, thyroid and skin. In this podcast, Scott E. Strome, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, discusses head and neck cancer causes and treatments.
Dr. Strome says smoking has been linked to some of these cancers, but now doctors are seeing an increase in head and neck cancer in people who don’t smoke. Some of these cancers may be associated with human papillomavirus, which also causes cervical cancer.
Speaking with Karen Warmkessel, Dr. Strome, a surgical oncologist, describes a range of treatment options for patients and the multidisciplinary approach at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center.
