Intraocular lenses can improve vision for people with cataracts, which are cloudy patches that develop in the lens of the eye. Now some people are also getting these lenses to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
In this interview, Dr. Ramzi Hemady, an ophthalmologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, describes the surgery to implant intraocular lenses and explains who is a good candidate for the procedure. He talks about the benefits for cataract patients as well as the development of new lenses that have bifocal and multifocal capabilities.
During this interview with Sharon Boston, Dr. Hemady also offers some advice for people who may be considering having this surgery. Dr. Hemady is also associate professor and acting chairman of ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
