In multiple sclerosis, the body's own immune system attacks the outer lining of the nerves. This causes a wide range of symptoms from numbness and tingling to double vision.
In this interview, Dr. Robert Shin, an MS specialist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, looks at the treatments for multiple sclerosis, many developed in the past two decades. Most of these drugs are injected. Dr. Shin also explains that some newer treatments can involve an I-V given once a month or once every several months. Researchers are also looking to develop MS drugs in pill form.
In this interview with Sharon Boston, Dr. Shin also discusses the role of exercise, physical therapy (including water or aqua-therapy and therapy with horses).
